About Sāttvatī

Sāttvatī School of Dance, established on 14 November 2022 by Sohini Karanth, is dedicated to nurturing the art of Kathak. The name “Sāttvatī’ means art filled with sattva, the institution is also named after one of the four vrittis from Natya Shāstra – Sāttvatī, the emotional style where Satvikābhinaya dominates. The school emphasizes traditional techniques, artistic expression, and cultural heritage, providing students with a comprehensive and enriching learning experience in Indian classical dance. Sāttvatī School of Dance was founded with the intention of creating a thoughtful and grounded space for learning Kathak. The school draws its name from the Sāttvatī vritti — the emotional mode where inner expression and sincerity take precedence. Here, training goes beyond movement. Students are guided to understand rhythm, music, expression, and the cultural context of the form, while developing patience, clarity, and discipline in their practice.

The faculty at Sāttvatī consists of dedicated dancers who continue to learn, perform, and grow alongside their students. Each teacher brings sincerity, patience, and clarity into the classroom, shaped by their own journeys within Kathak.
